Senior Mechanical / Electrical Design Engineer – Building Services

A multi-discipline Mechanical and Electrical Building Services Design and Consulting company are eager to receive applications from commercially competent MEP design engineer. Regardless of your bias, if you’re an accomplished Building Services Design Engineer with strong business acumen, they’ll want to hear from you. This is nothing like the generic senior design position you might’ve already had experience in, this is completely different! Producing high-quality designs to deadlines is of course an important responsibility. However, it only makes up around 20/25% of this position – there’s a lot more to it!

You’ll need to work on your own initiative with minimal supervision on all technical aspects of your discipline whilst you maintain Professional Qualifications in line with the respective and appropriate Accreditation Body…

The successful individual will ideally be able to perform the following list of duties after a thorough introduction and training are given:

  • Work within a mechanical, electrical and public health (MEP) discipline team providing design and technical advice on projects in a discipline capacity.
  • Understand the project appointment and scope of work following a briefing from the senior management team or Project Lead.
  • Provide information and agree input into a resource schedule for the appointed work. Monitor your time weekly against the agreed costs.
  • Understand the project risk allied to the project as a whole.
  • Understand project costs and the impact of designs on the overall budget for the scheme.
  • Carry out condition surveys for the discipline for combining into an overall report and collate all findings for issue to the client.
  • Take into account maintenance and installation practices within the design.
  • Complete detailed designs and supervise the work of others in this function.
  • Consider the feasibility of the project specific to the discipline and contribute to the overall feasibility study for the project.
  • Produce detailed and performance specification, room data sheets and equipment schedules for issue for the discipline subject to review by colleagues prior to issue.
  • Carry out detailed calculations appropriate to the discipline and review the work of others for accuracy.
  • Produce Residual Risk Reports in accordance with the CDM regulations with input from other disciplines as required.
  • Promote and consider sustainability and energy efficiency within designs.
  • Participate in technical reviews and audits as and when required. Ask for a technical review before the completion of key stages of projects.
  • Visit sites as required to determine the quality of the installation process allied to the discipline and report to the client for the whole project.
  • Deal with day-to-day queries from site allied to the discipline and report to the client.
  • Be able to demonstrate acceptable technical writing skills and produce written reports.
  • Work in co-ordination with all other design team members, internal and external.
  • Attend meetings to represent your discipline and be able to convey other disciplines on behalf of the company.
  • Raise any potential variations from agreed appointment with a member of the senior management team.
  • Implement and work to the companies Quality Management System.
  • Check work for compliance with good practice and the project brief.
  • Present work to the Senior Management Team or the Project Lead for approval prior to issue.
  • Assist with the supervision of any intermediate, graduate or trainee engineers.
  • Carry out defects inspections and produce reports.
  • Input in to the witnessing of commissioning.
  • Attend staff meetings, CPD Days and company communication meetings as requested.
  • Complete timesheets on a weekly basis.
  • Regularly communicate with your line manager and where applicable the Project Lead.
  • Proactively complete agreed performance objectives within the agreed timescales.
  • Input into the production of fee proposals and technical bids as required.
  • Input into QMS audits as and when required.
  • Communicate proactively and professionally with external design teams and clients, attending meetings in a professional manner. Prepare diligently for all meetings and issue a pre-prepared progress report to the meeting.
  • Understand the need to provide excellent client care and opportunities to develop additional business for the company.
  • Manage time on project to suit deadlines and complete assigned tasks as stipulated by senior management team.
  • Display a good working understanding of IES where it applies to the discipline.
  • Display a good working knowledge and understanding of the Microsoft Office suite of software.
  • Meet all deadlines and mile stones as agreed with the Senior Management Team as well as any project related deadlines.
  • Adhere to the Company’s H&S rules and procedures at all times.
